Dr Walid Phares on BBC Arabic February 4, 2012

Washington DC

In an interview with BBC TV Arabic, Professor Walid Phares author of 'The Coming Revolution: Struggle for Freedom in the Middle East' said "for the United States to confront the Assad regime head on, it would mean it would also have to face off with Iran's regime and its allies in Iraq as well as with Hezbollah. The Assad regime can't go backward anymore but it will fight hard to maintain itself as an oppressive machine inside Syria."

Phares, who advises members of the US Congress said "Russia and China will continue to veto any resolution that would entail a use of force against Assad regime forces. It will take the Syrian opposition to actually break up the Syrian armed forces and the emergence of rebel areas for the international community to decide to resort to Chapter 7 and consider a multinational force to intervene. Russia will continue to oppose A UN mandated force until reality on the ground would change. That's what Assad understand and that what Iran and Hezbollah understand as well."
