Washington DC, May 13, 2008

Dr Walid Phares, Director of the Future Terrorism Project at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies conducted a closed Congressional briefing on Tuesday May 1, 2008 on the "War waged by Hezbollah in Lebanon." The deliberations were kept confidential. Dr Phares, author of the recently released The Confrontation: Winning the War Against Future Jihad offered an analysis covering the background of the current Hezbollah offensive, the staged coup and possible US responses. Following is a summary of the briefing

1. Background

Hezbollah and the Syro-Iranian forces have been preparing for the grand counter offensive against the Cedars Revolution since May 2005

2. The Coup

Invasion of West Beirut
Isolation of Government leaders
Control of the Lebanese Army decision making
Offensive against the Druse in southern Mount Lebanon

Mobilization against other Sunni areas in the North and Bekaa
Using Arab diplomatic moves to their advantage

3. US response

Clear strategic position

UNSCR under Chapter 7

It is to note that on May 14, House US House Resolution H. RES. 1194 was introduced to put sanctions on Hezbollah, Syria and Iran for their aggression against the Lebanese Government and civil society.
